- Statutory Declaration

A statutory declaration is a legal document.  It is similar to a statement made under oath, however, it is not sworn.

Statutory declarations are commonly used to allow a person to declare something to be true for the purposes of satisfying some legal requirement or regulation when no other evidence is available. They are thus similar to affidavits (which are made on oath).

Depending on jurisdiction, statutory declarations can be used for:

  • Declarations of identity, nationality, marital status, etc. when documentary evidence is unavailable.
  • Declaring the intention to change one's name.
  • Statements of originality for applications.

- Deed Poll

A Deed Poll is a legal document that concerns one person and it is only signed by that person. A Deed Poll binds the signatory from the date of signing it.  Deed Polls have only one generally accepted meaning, that is, a change of name. A Deed Poll for a change of name contains three declarations and by signing the

Deed Poll you are committing yourself to:

1. Stop the use of your former name;
2. Start using your new name only;
3. Requesting everyone to address you by your new name.

With a Deed Poll, you can change your surname, add names, remove names or rearrange your existing names. You can change your name at any time.

Please note that a Deed Poll cannot be used to get your birth certificate changed to your new name.

- Commissioners for Oaths

Generally, the commissioners are tasked with the administering of oaths and the taking of legal documents to be used in Singapore. This includes the administering of oaths or affirmations in respect of affidavits to be used in Singapore courts, or statutory declarations to be used in Singapore.
